Character classes
Character dance is an integral part of classical ballet repertoire and is an important discipline for versatile young dancers to experience and master. Many ballets contain group dances or character variations which use the styles of traditional Hungarian, Polish, Russian or other national dances.
In our character classes, young dancers will enjoy exploring these traditional dances. Our specialist character teachers will introduce students to the traditional steps and essential stylistic and performance elements. Students will also begin to understand the relationship between character dance and classical technique.
Each class has a recommended age band and reflects the level of training given to students of that age group at The Royal Ballet School. This is a guide only, and students may take any class they feel is suitable for their level, provided they meet the minimum age recommendation. Please check the ‘Who can participate’ guidance under each class and check with your dance teacher if you’re not sure.
All classes will support students at any level to develop their skills, strengthen their technique, grow their understanding and develop artistry and expression in their dancing.
